Religious Freedom

The United States were founded on the principles of freedom for all it’s citizens, including that of religious freedom.

From the declaration that “...all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” To the Constitution in the establishment of our government that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” the right for individuals to be treated equally, with the same access and opportunity allowed to all individuals is an ideal makes this country great.

As the years have passed since this those words were written, many churches have enjoyed great success weaving their moral beliefs into ‘acceptable’ cultural prejudices (race, gender, sexual orientation, even other religions, etc), claiming their right to discriminate based on ‘Religious Freedom’.

Now, as the voices of the people that have been subjected to intolerance, discrimination and prejudice have become louder - demanding only the same rights as the rest - some churches have the arrogance say that THEIR religious freedom is now being compromised.

This cannot stand.

Freedom is the right for all to choose for themselves. For religious freedom, that means someone may choose to believe something you don’t. And that is the beauty of it.

It is up to all of us to defend the meaning of all freedoms, not just the ones that fall into our beliefs.
